It has not been a good weekend for the Big East. Yes, West Virginia and Villanova advanced, but the Hoyas of Georgetown were stunned in Raleigh by No. 10 seed Davidson.
Stephen Curry has been the MVP of the first two rounds of the tournament. After putting up 40 points against Gonzaga, he scored 30 against the Hoyas. Curry was held to five points in the first half (two-of-eight from the field) before exploding for 25 in the second half against Georgetown.
Curry's backcourt mate, NCAA assist leader Jason Richards, added 20 points in the shocker.
Roy Hibbert, Georgetown's big man, was in foul trouble and played just 16 minutes. He was held to just six points and was not a factor. Give credit to unsung heroes Thomas Sander and Andrew Lovedale for doing a good job defensively.
Another key was the turnover story. Davidson committed just five turnovers for the game, an incredible stat considering Georgetown's pressure defense while the Hoyas turned it over 20 times.
Bob McKillop has been an outstanding coach down at Davidson for many years. This season he decided to play North Carolina, UCLA and Duke during the regular season. Those games have paid off in tournament time as his squad has been prepared to handle the pressure.
Davidson came back from a 17-point deficit to knock off Georgetown. That leaves UCLA as the lone member of last season's final four still alive in this year's big dance.
