It's sad to see Billy Tubbs leaving TCU after this season. Tubbs has brought lots of enthusiasm to the college game. He has never been afraid to share his opinions and do his thing, even if it has been controversial.
As Frank Sinatra said, he did it his way! Let's hope he hooks up somewhere else in the college basketball environment.
I can't wait to go to Lubbock to call the TCU-Texas Tech game. Tubbs vs. The General, Robert Montgomery Knight! That should be quite a scene, baby!
SEEING GREEN IN DETROIT
Down at Detroit ... remember the name Willie Green. Rashard Phillips, the school's all-time leading scorer, has completed his eligibility -- so coach Perry Watson will be calling on Green to have a big season.
Green will have a big-time junior year in the Horizon League.
HAWKEYES HOPE PIERCE MAKES POINT
At Iowa, the Hawkeyes have a dynamic duo in Luke Recker and Reggie Evans.
The big question mark will be consistency at the point. If newcomer Pierre Pierce can live up to his billing and give coach Steve Alford a solid performance every night, this club will make noise in the Big Ten.
Also keep an eye on Chauncey Leslie, who hit 7-of-9 shots, scored 15 points and added three steals in the recent win over Boston University. Leslie can do it on offense and defense.
OWLS GET THEIR (BIG) MAN
Good news for coach John Chaney and Temple with the announcement that 7-footer Keith Butler has decided to become an Owl.
Temple assistant coaches Nate Blackwell and Dan Lebovitz were thrilled to receive the commitment. Temple won out over North Carolina and Cincinnati, among others, for Butler.
CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' FOR 'CATS
Arizona's coaches were ecstatic to receive a commitment from Hassan Adams of California, a wing player who they feel will fit into their system perfectly. Many big-time programs were chasing after this dynamite player, one of California's finest. The Wildcats also signed guard Chris Rodgers of Portland, Ore.
REDSHIRT COULD HELP BRUINS DOWN ROAD
At UCLA, Ray Young has decided to red-shirt this season. He averaged seven points per game last season. The Bruins are strong on the perimeter this year with Jason Kapono and Billy Knight.
Minutes will come for Young in the future, and this might turn out to be similar to Rick Anderson's situation at Arizona. Anderson red-shirted a year ago while the 'Cats had the likes of Richard Jefferson and Michael Wright logging big-time minutes. Sometimes that turns out to be a wise decision.
WILKINS, BULLDOGS MUST WAIT
Former N.C. State player Damien Wilkins had his appeal for immediate eligibility at Georgia denied, so he will have to sit out this season. Wilkins will give the Bulldogs an offensive boost next season.
FILLIN' IT UP
Keep an eye on Georgia State's Thomas Terrell. In a recent exhibition game, he scored 44 points, hitting eight trifectas for coach Lefty Driesell's team.
