What a super start!

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

NEW YORK -- What a magnificent way to start the season!

It was two incredible nights of Coaches vs. Cancer IKON Classic play at Madison Square Garden with quality games, which add so much to college basketball. It was Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk as Kansas added another trophy to Allen Fieldhouse!

Roy Williams' team really executed well on the offensive end. Ball movement and spacing were the keys, leading to high-percentage shots. You can tell Kansas is a dedicated team this year. Williams also got positive minutes from Mario Kinsey and Bryant Nash. The stars of the show were Kenny Gregory and Drew Gooden.

It wasn't easy against St. John's, whose tough, competitive kids wouldn't back down. You could see why freshman Omar Cook is such a special player. Plus, the Red Storm features Anthony Glover on the interior.

St. John's put forth a great effort and Mike Jarvis had to be happy with his team being tested by quality competition. His Diaper Dandies found out it's a different world in college basketball.

Williams, meanwhile, has to be ecstatic, being 2-0. Remember, he didn't have Luke Axtell for the first two games. If Axtell is as good as advertised in preseason he'll be important in the Kansas rotation.

Don't worry about Wildcats
Trust me ... Kentucky will be back!

Kentucky will find a way to win 20 games. There is no doubt the Wildcats will be back in the rankings and will be a factor in the SEC. Think about it, Kentucky could have easily won both its games at this tournament.

Instead, it was Heartbreak City!

The Wildcats had St. John's beaten in the first game, but didn't finish it off. Then came a tough overtime loss to UCLA in the consolation game. Tubby Smith simply has too much talent. Tayshaun Prince, Keith Bogans and Co. will bounce back, big-time!

Just remember what happened last year when the Dukies came to the Garden and opened with tough losses to Stanford and Connecticut. Coach K and his Blue Devils learned from those two games and then ran off 18 straight wins. I'm not saying Kentucky will win 18 in a row, but trust me, they will be back!

One thing about an early-season tournament: Teams that can get out 1-1 have to feel pretty good, so the Bruins and Red Storm can go home happy.
