Each week I post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.
STOCK UP: D-Backs' Schilling and Johnson, Paterno
How about a salute to the dynamic duo of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson! They have been super, scintillating and sensational in the postseason.
Schilling is 3-0 in the playoffs with an incredible 0.67 ERA, pitching three complete games. He was awesome in his last outing against the Braves, with 12 strikeouts in a four-hitter. Johnson really showed the media, which knocked him for losing seven straight postseason decisions. He was brilliant against the Braves, with a 2-0, 1.13 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 16 innings in the series.
Jerry Colangelo, another paison, has put together a winner, advancing to the World Series in just the fourth year of the franchise. It's pretty amazing to go from an expansion team to the World Series in such a short period of time. Congratulations to the Diamondbacks.
Stock up to Joe Paterno, who tied Bear Bryant's Division I-A record for wins at 323. His Nittany Lions scored shock city at Northwestern, 38-35. When all is said and done, I believe Bobby Bowden will pass both Paterno and Bryant for the record, since Bowden just signed a new deal that puts him in the $2 million club. Paterno has kept his composure despite a rough start, and his team finally came through with a big-time W. Next up: Ohio State. JoePa will have his troops ready as he tries to shatter the mark.
Also a big stock up to North Carolina, and I am not talking about the Tar Heels basketball program. John Bunting's team started 0-3 against a rough schedule -- Oklahoma, Maryland and Texas -- three teams currently ranked among the top 12 in America, baby! Bunting's team never quit, upsetting Florida State, followed by last weekend's impressive blowout of Clemson in Death Valley. I've seen a lot of Julius Peppers on the basketball court, and he has been a star on the gridiron this season for North Carolina. He may be the best defensive player in America.
Also stock up to Jamie Moyer of the Mariners, the son-in-law of Digger Phelps, my colleague. Moyer has come through when Lou Piniella has needed him, winning 20 games this season and pitching well against the Yankees in a must-win situation in Game 3 of the ALCS.
STOCK DOWN: Bucs, Ravens, Maddux
What's up with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offense? Yes, Keyshawn Johnson played well, but the offensive line allowed Brad Johnson to be sacked 10 times. Tony Dungy's team appears to be in some trouble.
The Baltimore Ravens are also struggling at 3-3. The defending Super Bowl champions were stunned by the Cleveland Browns.
I really like Greg Maddux as a pitcher and a person, but he couldn't get it done on three days rest for the Braves. Maddux only won once in his final 10 starts of the season, a disappointing end of the year.
