D-Backs dethrone Yanks

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Nov. 5
Each week I post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.

A salute to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who came back in the ninth inning of Game 7 against the most dominant closer in the game, Mariano Rivera. The New York Yankees had to be happy to have Rivera on the mound, just three outs away from another world championship.

The Diamondbacks, a veteran team, did not give up. It was fitting that Luis Gonzalez, who had such a terrific season, came through with the game-winning hit. I felt that Rivera's bad throw on the sacrifice bunt with a runner on first was a key play that helped Arizona.

Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson are the modern-day Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. They were dominant throughout the postseason and they deserved to be co-MVPs. Congratulations to Jerry Colangelo, Bob Brenly, Mark Grace, Mike Morgan ... all of the Diamondbacks.

Also a salute to the Yankees. Joe Torre and his team showed class throughout the difficult postseason. They beat two great teams in the Athletics and Mariners, and never gave up in winning in dramatic fashion in Yankee Stadium. This World Series gave us so many great moments -- it will be remembered for a long time!

Stock up also to Michigan State RB T.J. Duckett, who ran for 211 yards and caught the game-winning touchdown in an upset of Michigan. The Wolverines entered the game leading the nation in rushing defense, holding opponents below 55 yards per contest.

San Antonio Spurs guard Steve Smith got a little revenge against his former team, hitting 8-of-8 trifectas while scoring 36 points in a win over Portland.

The Chicago Bears are having a special season; you know something good is happening when you win games like they have the last two weeks. Mike Brown was the right man in the right place with another interception for the game-winning score.

Virginia Tech and UCLA saw their football BCS possibilities falter. The Hokies were blown away by a Pittsburgh team that has been mediocre this season; Antonio Bryant came back to life with a couple of touchdown catches. UCLA turned the ball over seven times in a 20-14 loss to Washington State.

The New York Knicks have been in struggle city early this season. I caught some of New York's loss to the Chicago Bulls, when the Knicks were held to 79 points. Latrell Sprewell and Allan Houston are the only offensive threats. I believe it's going to be a long season for Jeff Van Gundy's team.

What about boxer Zab Judah and his performance after a TKO loss in the 140-pound unification title bout against Kostya Tszyu? Judah went nuts when the referee stopped the fight near the end of the second round after Tszyu knocked the Brooklyn-based fighter down. Judah put his glove under the ref's throat and threw a ringside stool -- two major no-nos.
