Tough start for UNC

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Nov. 19
Each week I post my "Dick's Dow Jones" report on whose stock is up and whose is down from across the world of sports.

Florida's football team is the best in America right now. I was very impressed with the Gators in their win over Florida State. Rex Grossman should be the Heisman front-runner. Grossman threw for over 300 yards in nine straight games before falling just short of 300 against the Seminoles.

Steve Spurrier's team suffered a tough loss at Auburn, or the Gators would be right up there in the rankings. Florida is still in the BCS picture, and there is a tough game ahead against Tennessee.

Maryland's Ralph Friedgen should be college football's Coach of the Year. What a great win for the Terps, coming from behind against N.C. State. That W gave Maryland a 10-win season and an invite to the BCS. The Terps could end up in the Orange Bowl. I saw Friedgen doing a dance and that was something else -- I don't think he should give up his day job, baby!

Jerry Rice just keeps on going ... I don't want to hear anything about age. All he did for the Raiders was total 131 yards in catches, including three touchdowns. Do you think the Niners wish they had him back now?

Lleyton Hewitt finished the year No. 1 in tennis. The Australian is the youngest man to end the year atop the rankings (Jimmy Connors was 22 when he finished No. 1).

North Carolina's basketball team lost a lot of talent (Joseph Forte, Brendan Haywood), but the Tar Heels weren't expected to lose to Hampton in their season opener. Hampton lost three starters from last year's team that upset Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels shot 6-of-34 from 3-point range. Steve Merfeld, the Hampton coach, didn't know what to say in the postgame press conference.

Florida State's football team lost its fourth game of the season. The Seminoles lost back-to-back games for the first time since 1991. It has been a tough campaign for Bobby Bowden.

I don't like to criticize young men who try hard on the field, but Ohio State quarterback Steve Bellisari let his teammates and coaches down -- and more importantly, he let himself down. Bellisari was charged with drunken driving. This came just before Senior Day at Columbus, with the Buckeyes facing Illinois in a key Big Ten showdown.
