On meeting, greeting and mistaken identity

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Nov. 26
When I'm out on the road, I'm fortunate enough to meet a lot of great people. I really appreciate the time I get to spend meeting fans.

One fan thought I was actor Danny DeVito!
An interesting thing happened to me when I was at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Thanksgiving Day. I was lighting a candle when a fan came up to me and asked to take a picture with me.

Shortly after that, several huge individuals walked over and joined in. I knew that this group had to be a football team.

Indeed, it was the University of California football team, in the area to play Rutgers in a makeup game postponed following the events of Sept. 11. When I asked the players what their record was, they told me that they gave Stanford a great battle last week. When I asked again about the record, one replied in a low voice, "0-10."

I told the team not to worry. "You will get your victory tomorrow," I said. "Here you guys are praying while Rutgers is home eating turkey."

Sure enough, California went out and scored a 20-10 victory over the Scarlet Knights in New Jersey.

Also during my stay in New York City, I had an interesting conversation with another fan, who was seeking an autograph. She said, "I am a big fan of yours, Mr. DeVito."

She thought I was actor Danny DeVito!

It's always interesting to meet people on the road.
