Jeremy Foley is a guy who gets right after it and gets what he wants.
The Florida athletics director has that magical touch when he goes after coaches who can take the Gators to the promised land. When Carol Ross surprisingly said goodbye and the women's basketball job opened, Foley was shocked. He was reportedly preparing to offer Ross a contract extension, rewarding her for years of building the program.
Instead, Foley went out and landed the head coach of the WNBA's Orlando Miracle, Carolyn Peck. She did a fantastic job as the head coach at Purdue, leading that program to the national championship in 1999.
With a number of prominent women's college coaching jobs opening up (including Maryland and Ohio State), there was competition to secure a name coach. In my book, Foley hit a home run, baby! With the incredible facilities now, Peck has an enticing recruiting tool. The new facilities are awesome with a capital A!
Peck brings youth, knowledge and a great basketball IQ. She has great command of what's happening in the game today. Peck clearly wanted to get back into the college environment -- and she found a great place for her return! She joins Florida's high-profile men's coach, Billy Donovan.
The Florida women's program will be on the rise. Fans in Tennessee Volunteers country better get ready, baby! Peck won't back down from anyone ... this was a tremendous choice by Foley.
