Stock Watch: FAST-GLANCE WEEK IN REVIEW
Jan. 12, 2004 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down...
STOCK UP: Wisconsin, San Antonio, Stanford All On Rise
Wisconsin Badgers -- I was really impressed with the convincing wins over Indiana and Michigan State. Coach Bo Ryan's Badgers are the heavyweight team in the Big Ten and Ryan is one of the most underrated coaches in America.
San Antonio Spurs --
The Spurs stayed hot as they beat the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night to go 17-1 in their last 18 games. Power forward Tim Duncan is class personified on and off the court.
Stanford Cardinal -- Coach Mike Montgomery's team had a big win over the Arizona Wildcats at the McKale Center for Stanford's fourth consecutive win there. Right now, Montgomery is my choice for coach of the year.
Washington Redskins -- The Redskins made a super move naming Joe Gibbs head coach. Gibbs is a welcome addition to a great coaching lineup in the NFC East that already features Bill Parcells (Cowboys), Andy Reid (Eagles) and Tom Coughlin (Giants).
Steve Smith -- The Panthers wide receiver caught six passes for 163 yards, including the game-winning 69-yard touchdown to stun the Rams in the second overtime.
STOCK DOWN: Will Suns Rise In Future?
Phoenix Suns -- The Suns need better talent to complement forwards Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion. I'm sure owner Jerry Colangelo will get the job done long-term, and now with the trade of guard Stephon Marbury he has the cap room to add players next year and beyond.
St. Louis Rams -- I disagree with coach Mike Martz's decision at the end of regulation not to go for the win at home. If a team has a pro quarterback, it should use him to make big plays.
Dallas Stars -- The Stars are paying a ton of high salaries, and if the season ended now they'd miss the NHL playoffs.
