Cardinals leading NL Central

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

July 12, 2004 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down...

Los Angeles Lakers -- The Lakers hired Rudy Tomjanovich, who has two rings of his own from his days leading the Houston Rockets. Now they need to re-sign Kobe Bryant.

Ohio State -- The Buckeyes made a good move by hiring Thad Matta as their new basketball coach.

St. Louis Cardinals -- The Cardinals have been hot despite last night's loss to the Cubs. They've won eight of their past nine games, and manager Tony La Russa's team is running away and hiding in the NL Central.

Freddy Garcia -- The new Chicago White Sox starter received a three-year, $27 million deal from the White Sox.

Johnny Damon -- The Boston Red Sox center fielder has been on fire, going 18-for-33 in his past six games.

Seattle Mariners -- The Mariners have lost nine straight games, and it's gotten so bad for manager Bob Melvin's team that shortstop Rich Aurilia was designated for assignment.

Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery -- Both failed to qualify for the Olympics in the 100 meters.

Marcus Vick -- The Virginia Tech quarterback was suspended again for off-field problems.

Eric Gagne -- The Los Angeles Dodgers' closer saw his 84-game save streak snapped by Arizona.
