Cordova has reconstructive elbow surgery

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Francisco Cordova, already on the disabled list for more than a year, will be out at least another season after reconstructive elbow surgery.

Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala., performed the surgery Thursday. Cordova probably won't return until the 2003 season -- or 2 years after he last pitched in the majors.

An orthopedist who has operated on numerous pitchers, Andrews had advised Cordova twice earlier this year to not have the surgery. ...
