Sometimes the best move is the one that isn't made

A look at the wheelings and dealings at the NHL trade deadline.

Every NHL team is busy at the trade deadline. I have sat in team offices at the deadline, and teams are working the phones and scouting other teams' rosters.

In the end, however, some teams come away with nothing. Sometimes, it's better to stand pat than to sacrifice too much talent. Teams can caught get up in a game, an urge to make a deal because another team did. If they give in to the temptation, they can end up trading away more than they wanted to.
