Devils name MacLean assistant coach

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Former NHL player John MacLean joined the New Jersey Devils as an assistant coach Sunday.

MacLean, a member of New Jersey's 1995 Stanley Cup championship team, retired as a player in June after a 19-season career.

He had 413 goals and 429 assists in 1,194 games with the Devils and three other NHL teams.

His overtime goal on April 3, 1988, in Chicago allowed the Devils to clinch a playoff berth for the first time.
