Not only are the New Jersey Devils trailing a series for the first time in the 2003 playoffs, they are trying to plug some holes defensively.

Ottawa's 3-2 overtime victory over New Jersey on Saturday in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals exposed cracks in the Devils' once-impenetrable defensive wall as the Senators forced turnovers with tough forechecking and feasted on breakdowns.

As a result, Devils coach Pat Burns is considering changes to his defense. Either Ken Daneyko or Oleg Tverdovsky might be benched for Game 2 on Tuesday. Tommy Albelin or Richard Smehlik will probably be inserted into the lineup.
