'An institution at Pinehurst' dies at 78

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Don Padgett, a former PGA president who was instrumental in bringing championship golf back to Pinehurst's No. 2 course, died Friday. He was 78.

Peter Stilwell, director of marketing and business development at the Pinehurst resort, said Padgett died at his home of cancer. Padgett was ill for more than a year.

Padgett, a native of New Castle, Ind., served as the PGA president from 1977-78 before coming to Pinehurst in 1987 as executive vice president of golf.
