Mixed views on road courses

Gains made in Winston Cup racing aren't always measured in wins or pole positions.

Sometimes, even the slightest improvement is cause for celebration, particularly for drivers who have struggled more times than they've enjoyed success in a given season.

That's kind of the position that veteran driver Jeremy Mayfield and rookie Casey Mears find themselves in heading into this weekend's Dodge/Save Mart 500 at Infineon (formerly Sears Point) Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
