Leafs' future on hold

Toronto is not alone in its inactivity at the end of the first week of free agency, but few other teams are as conspicuous by their inability or unwillingness to sign any players.

So many players grew up as fans of the Leafs, they'd love to fulfill lifelong dreams to play for Toronto. Joe Nieuwendyk, who grew up in nearby Whitby, Ontario, is such a player. The unrestricted free-agent center, who just helped New Jersey win the Stanley Cup, is willing to accept a pay cut from the $5 million he made last season and accept a lesser role to end his career in his hometown, according to the Toronto Sun.
