Smyth agrees to two years, $7 million

In the end, the Edmonton Oilers decided to be the masters of their own destiny. At least as far as one of their best players is concerned.

The Oilers and forward Ryan Smyth reached an agreement on a two-year deal minutes before their salary arbitration hearing Thursday in Toronto. Smyth will make a base salary of $3.45 million this season and $3.55 million next year. Smyth earned $3.025 million last season.
