  • It's been quite a road trip for Dontrelle Willis. In Denver. He met his estranged father for the first time since he was two. Tonight, he returns to the Bay Area to face Barry Bonds and the Giants. Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post writes about the welcome he will receive from his old friends and coaches upon his return home. He describes West Coast Sporting Goods, the store in Oakland where Dontrelle used to hang out. It's an all-baseball store and sounds pretty neat.

  • Speaking of Bonds, Gene Collier of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette does just that. Collier writes very well in making his case that Bonds cannot hold a candle to his godfather, Willie Mays. Agree with him or not, this is a column that is worth reading for the quality of the writing alone.

  • If the Phillies are going to make it to October, they'll need to be doing better than getting swept by teams like the Brewers -- obviously. If manager Larry Bowa is to keep his job, this sort of thing will have to stop. Bill Conlin of the Philadelphia Daily News lists the Ten Stages of a Manager's Tenure and finds that Bowa is nearing the end of his unless he can get his team to step it up the rest of the way.
