Trouble in the desert, two starting QBs in Oregon and filling some big shoes at Washington State highlight the Pac-10 team notes.

Arizona
  • Buzzards have been spotted around Arizona's preseason camp. The latest piece of carrion was senior receiver Andrae Thurman, who was ruled academically ineligible this month. Thurman and the departed Bobby Wade accounted for 2,300 receiving yards in 2002, and now the Wildcats have only one receiver who caught at least 20 passes last year. That won't help whoever wins the quarterback job, which likely won't be resolved until a few games into the season. Coach John Mackovic said that both Nic Costa and Ryan O'Hara will play in Saturday's opener against UTEP.

  • Other issues: projected starting guard John Parada suffered a knee injury, and tailback Clarence Farmer has been slowed by a bum knee and his relationship with Mackovic. Oh, and five defensive linemen have been lost for a variety of reasons over the past month.
