Lance Berkman's a great hitter, but it's hard to imagine Joe Fan yelling to his family, "Honey! Kids! Get in here quick! Berkman's up!" Ditto for Garret Anderson, who actually won the Home Run Derby last year. Unfortunately, too many of the great power hitters just can't be bothered, so we wind up watching sluggers who can hit the ball out of the park but just don't quite bring to mind power.

That's not going to change, because you can't force anybody to participate in what is essentially a freak show. But nobody can take our imaginations away from us, and I've come up with a "Dream" Home Run Derby, composed of great home-run hitters of the last 80 years. So with no further ado, my four-member teams for the Dream Home Run Derby ...

Americans: Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, Ken Griffey Jr.
Nationals: Ralph Kiner, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa

What? No Hank Aaron? No Willie Mays?
