PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The drought in Western New York State has reached four seasons now. Four years without a winning record, four seasons without a postseason berth, and four years of broken promises.

If the slump reaches five seasons . . . well, the loyal fans here are apt to become more reactionary than rabid, and that is a messy scenario that Buffalo Bills officials don't even want to think about. Coming off a 6-10 season, one which started with such promise as the Bills clobbered New England and Jacksonville by an aggregate 69-17 count, there is plenty of concern, despite a roster that seems primed for playoff contention.
