Pavel falls after avoiding first-round ouster

MILAN, Italy -- Top-seeded Andrei Pavel of Romania lost in the second round of the Milan Indoors, beaten by Tomas Behrend of Germany 7-5, 7-6 (3).

Pavel was taken to three tiebreaks in escaping the first round. Behrend had the only service break Thursday.

Third-seeded Mario Ancic of Croatia, the 2004 runner-up, also lost, to Ukrainian qualifier Sergyi Stakhovsky 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3).
