Mauch managed four teams to 1,901 wins

LOS ANGELES -- Gene Mauch, "the little general" who won 1,901 games as a manager but became infamous for historic losses, died Monday. He was 79.

Gene Mauch's career 1925: Born Nov. 18 in Salina, Kan.

1943: Signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers as a free agent.

May 3, 1947: Traded with Hank Behrman, Kirby Higbe, Dixie Howell, and Cal McLish to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Al Gionfriddo and $100,000 cash.
