Potential and a player's circumstances are two ways you can differentiate between members of the proverbial "rest of the field," and one of the many factors owners often take into account is the amount of time a quarterback might throw because his team is behind. Many will tell you statistics are more misleading in football than any other sport -- the season is just 16 games, so it makes sense -- which is why evaluating when a quarterback earned his lofty totals is an important tool in evaluating his value.
