The math is dizzying, at least for somebody who took his one required algebra course in college and then left behind the analytical arts forever. Which is probably why I wasn't incisive enough in Monday's column, regarding the combinations involved in the American League playoff push. To wit:
Rob , I am dumbfounded that so many so-called "experts" still pick both the Yankees and Red Sox to make the playoffs. It's practically impossible, considering that they play each other three times and one of those teams must lose twice. At best, the AL East loser will go 4-2 in their final six games. Entering those final six games, the Indians only need to go 4-2 to tie for the Wild Card ... and that's assuming that both the Red Sox and Yankees win Monday night. Set them straight!
