Dutchman wins 1,500-meter speedskating event

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands -- Simon Kuipers of the Netherlands won the 1,500-meter race Saturday at a speedskating World Cup event, beating Chad Hedrick of the United States.

Kuipers won in 1 minute, 45.39 seconds to edge Hedrick, who set the world record of 1:42:78 in the same event last month in Utah. Enrico Fabris of Italy was third in 1:45.56.

Hedrick tops the overall World Cup standings in the 1,500, followed by fellow American Shani Davis and Kuipers.
