Wild-card weekend?

Updated: February 6, 2006, 4:20 PM ET
ESPN.com contributor Terry Frei, a longtime hockey scribe for The Denver Post, wrote an interesting "what if" piece for our Web site over the weekend. Frei wondered what it would be like if the Stanley Cup finals were contested like the Super Bowl, a one-game showdown, complete with a week's worth of media hype, to determine the champ.

While the NHL likely would never go for such a dramatic change, the league has talked about another NFL-type idea for future playoff seasons.

At present, the league is seriously considering the possibility of upping the number of teams that qualify for the postseason from 16 to 20. In fact, they'll probably discuss that topic again this week at the GM meetings (Tuesday-Thursday) in Las Vegas.
