Allard Baird met face-to-face with the free agents he courted this winter to look in their eyes and see that they were on board with the Royals' plans and to answer any questions they had. And it would have been natural for some of them to wonder whether they were doing the right thing. Reggie Sanders has seemingly lived half his career in the playoffs and World Series, even while bouncing from team to team, from the Diamondbacks to the Giants to the Cardinals; you might expect that he would have some concern about joining a team that went 56-106 a year ago. Doug Mientkiewicz, too, has been with contenders for his entire career, famously recording the last out in the 2004 World Series. Mark Grudzielanek's last game was in the National League Championship Series in October.
