Whither Slammin' Sammy?

Updated: February 13, 2006, 2:40 PM ET
Sammy Sosa wants more money from the Washington Nationals, Bill Ladson writes, and there is word from colleague Enrique Rojas that Sosa also is considering retirement.

Scroll down to the bottom of Sammy Sosa's page on baseballreference.com, and you can find his career salary total:. He's made about $125 million playing baseball, and probably a whole lot more endorsing Pepsi and the like. If the report is accurate and I'm Nationals GM Jim Bowden and Sosa is telling me that he needs an extra $500,000 to make it worth his while, I'm saying, no thanks.

From the Nationals' perspective, you want Sosa excited about playing baseball, about getting the chance to run out on the field every day and having the opportunity to hit those 12 homers he needs to reach 600 for his career. If what Sosa really wants is that extra $500,000 -- enough to push his salary over the symbolic figure of $1 million -- then you don't want him.
