Lady Luck on Swedes' side

Updated: February 27, 2006, 1:37 PM ET
Maybe the die was cast four Februarys ago. Maybe, in those four years after the Swedes suffered that unthinkable loss to Belarus at the Salt Lake Games in 2002, the hockey gods had conspired to make it up to them. Maybe they felt bad that they'd allowed a Belarus shot to carom off Tommy Salo's head and go into the net. (What were the odds of that happening?)

On Sunday, four years after that miserable loss, this very talented Swedish team seemed to have another player on its bench: Lady Luck. Or, at least, the Swedes had sticks that didn't break at just the wrong moment.

On three different and very important occasions in the final period, Finnish players could do nothing but throw their broken sticks to the ice in disgust. Those broken sticks proved to be daggers that killed their gold medal hopes.
