MLB

Bronson Arroyo homered in his only at-bat in his Reds debut last week, and he did it again in his first at-bat in the Reds' 9-2 win over the Cubs on Tuesday. Arroyo is the first pitcher in the live-ball era to hit home runs on each of his first two at-bats in a season.

Arroyo is also the first pitcher in major-league history to hit a home run and earn a victory in each of his first two starts of a season. The only other pitcher even to hit homers in his first two starts was Sean Bergman of the Astros in 1999.

• The Yankees set an American League record by posting their ninth consecutive win in a home opener. They defeated the Royals 9-7. The only previous AL team to win home openers in eight consecutive seasons was the Yankees from 1920-27, spanning their last three seasons at the Polo Grounds and their first five at Yankee Stadium. The major league record is 10 by the Pirates from 1945-54.
