BoSox ball finally finds home

The Doug Mientkiewicz-Red Sox dispute over the 2004 championship ball has been resolved, as Murray Chass reports. The Red Sox can visit the ball at the Hall of Fame whenever they see fit, and the first baseman will get along without whatever compensation he would've settled for. Somewhere, an arbitrator is weeping tears of joy that he doesn't have to hear this case.

• Within this notebook, Gerry Fraley details the struggles of so many pitchers who participated in the World Baseball Classic. While the games turned out to be as good as Major League Baseball thought they would be, I have no doubt that many players will decline to participate the next time around -- based on conversations with players, agents and executives -- unless the timing of the event is changed.
