Young must earn promotion
The Rays won't allow Young to participate in extended spring games right away, partly because Young has been bothered by a sore wrist, but partly because the team believes that part of his punishment should be a forced absence from the game. Friedman wants to see Young conduct himself with contrition, while embracing the community service that is tied to his suspension. If Young mishandles the next month, Friedman said, "this further highlights the mental maturity that he's lacking. But if he takes to this like I hope he will, he could run with this and get back to the big leagues this year."
Players are tested by how they handle adversity, Friedman noted, how they play through a slump or a difficult personal situation. "It's important that he gets this ... learns from this, and has the right message in place."
