Nick Punto and the Piranhas

Some fans in The Cell in Chicago regurgitated Nick Punto's new nickname this weekend, using it to get all over the Twins third baseman. "Hey, Punto, you think you're a piranha, don't you?" a White Sox fan shouted.

Punto chuckled yesterday as he recounted the moment, partly because of the irony. The moniker was bestowed upon him and a handful of his teammates by White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen a couple of weeks ago, and he knows that Guillen meant it entirely as a compliment, as a respectful description of how Punto and the Piranhas take little bites out of you.

"I think it's a nice way of calling us scrappy non-power hitters good baseball players," Punto said, from the Minnesota clubhouse. "I think it's hilarious, and I know what he means by it."
