A banner night

Rarely on the crazy, hectic college football trail do I have a chance to indulge one of my other sports passions: hockey. So when I had a chance to watch the Stanley Cup banner raised to the rafters, followed by a top-shelf opening night matchup of the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres, I didn't hesitate to make the sleaziest of moves.

Yep, I made the last-minute "can you hook me up with tickets?" plea. It's just the kind of call I hate getting: a long-lost friend or cousin needs four good ones for Michigan-Notre Dame or Florida State-Florida. And, no, he or she wasn't expecting to pay for them!

I would have happily paid to see the Sabres and Canes Wednesday night. Didn't have to, but I would have.
