Running backs come in all shapes and sizes, and while some running back styles may not be a perfect fit for all offensive schemes, the traits to be a great one always seem to remain consistent. Speed, size, vision, instincts and the ability to break tackles are all strengths of upper-echelon backs at any level.

Many backs who lack ideal size must display great toughness, speed and quickness to compensate. Also, even if an undersized back is extremely explosive and fast but gets injured on a regular basis, his stock will drop despite overall talent because durability is a huge factor in evaluating running backs.
