Less hype, more depth with Class of '08

In comparing this year's ESPN 150 to last year's, what strikes me right away is the lack of "star power." Last year, Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, O.J. Mayo, Kyle Singler, Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose were household names on the high school circuit, young men whom college recruiters knew about since the sixth grade. Love is the son of Stan Love, who played in the NBA and is the brother of Mike Love, lead singer of the Beach Boys.

Gordon was involved in a hotly contested recruiting battle between Illinois and Indiana, originally committing to Bruce Weber but then switching his allegiance to Kelvin Sampson when Sampson took over at IU.

Mayo was a high school legend. He had his own Web site since early middle school, was a legend in the state of West Virginia and would have gone directly to the NBA if the eligibility rules were different.
