Torre's fate rests in weeks ahead

Joe Torre spoke about a possible return in 2008, and this puts general manager Brian Cashman on the spot, writes John Harper. I would respectively disagree with Harper: The Yankees have basically tabled conversations with some of their prospective free agents, like Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada, until after the season, which allows the front office to inform Torre about his future with the team. Joe, let's talk after the season. By then, the context for the decision about Torre will be clarified. If the Yankees make the playoffs, that helps Torre's case. He would be 12-for-12 in qualifying for the postseason, since taking over as manager of the Yankees. If the Yankees won the World Series, he would be untouchable, again.
