American open-wheel racing braces for more defections

What's NASCAR got that the IndyCar Series doesn't have? If you're newly crowned champion Dario Franchitti, the answer is simple: more money, fame and -- perhaps most important -- safety, writes Terry Blount.

Likely number of former Indianapolis 500 winners in the 2008 Daytona 500: four (Juan Pablo Montoya, Dario Franchitti, Sam Hornish Jr. and Jacques Villeneuve).

Likely number of former Indy 500 winners in the 2008 Indy 500: three (Helio Castroneves, Buddy Rice and Dan Wheldon).

These are not good days for open-wheel racing. The IndyCar Series probably will lose two more of its stars to NASCAR in Franchitti and Hornish.
