Newman fails to get win, succeeds at affecting the Chase

Ryan Newman didn't win Sunday -- and hasn't for 77 races -- but the non-Chase driver did almost all you could hope for by making the Chase between race winner Jimmie Johnson and points leader Jeff Gordon 10 points tighter, writes K. Lee Davis.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Ryan Newman had a chance to win Sunday at Martinsville Speedway on the final restart with eventual winner Jimmie Johnson squarely in his sights.

That opportunity was taken away when the green-white-checkered finish dissolved in a final caution that ended the race under a yellow flag.
