Vermilion tries to stop Student Council

The late-blooming Student Council has Vermilion to beat in his effort to become the second American winner of the $2.5 million Japan Cup Dirt at Tokyo Racecourse on Saturday. A 5-year-old son of Kingmambo, Student Council prepped perfectly for his Japanese odyssey with a solid 1 1/4-length victory in the Hawthorne Gold Cup on Sept. 29.
