Clemens-McNamee way too much

Updated: February 13, 2008, 11:20 AM ET
Several members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee are unhappy that Wednesday's hearing has been turned into a showcase of Roger Clemens versus Brian McNamee, write Mel Antonen and A.J. Perez.

But there will be a hearing, and at its heart might be a new affidavit Andy Pettitte gave to committee investigators, in which he says he talked in 1999 or 2000 to Clemens about Clemens' alleged use of human growth hormone, Duff Wilson and Michael Schmidt write.

Heard from lawyers that some committee members think having this conversation play out, in detail, is beneath the dignity of their offices. It has turned into a legal mud-wrestling match, with Clemens and his oft-quoted attorney, Rusty Hardin, on one side and McNamee and his oft-quoted lawyers on the other side. Some committee members would rather this play out in a court someplace, and would be happy to wash their hands of it and let the Justice Department step in.
