What in the wild, wild world of sports is going on with all these muscle strains? Is it just me or does it seem to be a problem of an even greater magnitude this year? Last year, the Yankees had a rash of players go down with hamstring strains, but this year, their marquee players (Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez) seem to be suffering from injuries to the other side of the thigh, the quadriceps. The hamstring strain, however, seems to be the most common injury floating around the other major league ballclubs, with the Los Angeles Angels (Howie Kendrick, Chone Figgins) perhaps leading the way. Even pitchers, whom we usually associate with shoulder and elbow dysfunction, have been bitten by the hamstring bug, most notably the New York Mets' Pedro Martinez and recently recovered Atlanta Braves' Tom Glavine.
