Manny, Babe alike in many ways

Updated: June 1, 2008, 3:24 PM ET
The 500th home run of Manny Ramirez's career landed just yards from where Babe Ruth grew up, and maybe that was appropriate. The window dressing of Ruth's story is about The Babe being The Babe: eating hot dogs, hanging his manager out of a moving train, promising home runs to kids, womanizing, enjoying life. And in the same way, Manny being Manny is about crazy cut-off plays, forgetful baserunning, a Green Monster restroom stop and a big, playful smile.

But at the core of Manny, as was the case with Ruth, is pure baseball brilliance, reflected in numbers. Ramirez has the 500 homers, and the 11 seasons of 100 RBIs, and 1,639 career RBIs, and the fourth-highest batting average of all time among the 24 members of the 500 home run club.
