AOYs and Why Nots

As Skeet Reese fights to become the first man to win back-to-back Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year awards since 1991, I thought this would be a good time to talk about AOY and its history. The award has come a long way since its inception in 1970. That was the first of Bill Dance's three AOY titles. He won again in 1974 and 1977, though he won his last BASS tournament in 1970. Isn't that surprising? I used to host an outdoors radio program in Georgia a few years back, and every so often I'd give away prizes to listeners who correctly answered trivia questions. When I asked them what year did Dance win his last BASS tournament, I got everything from 1980 to 2000, but no one came close to the actual date.
