Valdes moves on, but Whitsett upset at U.S. Junior Amateur

SHOAL CREEK, Ala. -- The top seed at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship moved on, but the defending champ was sent home in Wednesday's first-round matches.

Jorge Fernandez Valdes, the No. 1 seed, who led the stroke play portion with a 36-hole total of 5-under-par 139, needed a 25-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to advance over Cory McElyea.
