From a dispassionate viewpoint, life isn't tangibly worse for losing a winning lottery ticket than it is for picking the wrong numbers in the first place. A person wakes up the next morning with all the same possessions and all the same options they had the day before. All that went missing was potential and any ensuing damage is of the self-inflicted variety as they react to a fiction that something was taken from them.
Then again, if we lived our lives according to dispassionate logic, what would it matter if a group of college students won six consecutive basketball games in March and April?
