Pirates won't give Lamont extension

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Pittsburgh manager Gene Lamont said Thursday he asked to talk to other teams after his contract extension was rejected by owner Kevin McClatchy, but the Pirates turned him down.

Lamont, the Pirates' manager since 1997, is in the final year of his contract.
