Ernie Davis, who led Syracuse to a national championship in 1959, became the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961. Along the way, he smashed the great Jim Brown's school records, setting new marks for career rushing yards (2,386) and points scored (220). Washington selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1962 NFL draft, then traded his rights to Cleveland. It seemed Davis would join Brown, his boyhood hero, in the Browns backfield.
